McMurtry Announces Upside-down One Make Series

In an effort to boost exposure and sales of their track only electric fan car, McMurtry has announced a new one-make series for their car, the Spéirling. The Michelin Spéirling Inverse Cup (presented by WindShear), is a series unlike anything before: the cars will race upside down!

The idea to exploit this electric nugget’s ability to generate more than its own body weight in downforce was first thought up in 2024, after not being invited to set a lap time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. After telling this fact about the car’s ability to stick to the wall to enough eccentric rich people, emails began to flood in about demonstrations. And so, the idea was hatched.

Ten rounds will be held at several locations around the world, all of which will have the cars either vertical or complete inverted. Venues such as the front face of Hoover Dam, several warehouses and stadiums converted to hold the inverted cars, and a brand new upside down race track commissioned by the Saudi King are just a few examples of where these cars will race. Each round will feature 10 cars, one qualifying session, and two sprint races. The cars are expected to last the duration of each stint before requiring a recharge.

Expect the first round to start in Nevada early in 2026, as McMurtry irons out a few “small hiccups” related to running the cars upside down for just around an hour. This includes keeping the drivers from passing out and accidentally shutting the suction fans off.

Other plans to generate publicity for the new car have also included proposing a modified version of the Spéirling to Formula E as a next gen car, setting the record for the longest time a car has been stuck to the ceiling, cross-promotions with Dyson, and having their press car climb the CN Tower in Toronto.

We at MSIMA are huge fans of this, quite frankly insane little British fan car, and are excited to see where McMurtry go next!
