Riding that sweet regulations rule change high, IMSA has announced that they are seeking to replace its unloved and oddly paced LMP3 class with a more budget friendly and easy to manage class.
“After reviewing viewership data and team feedback, we have decided to begin a search for a new entree level prototype class”, says IMSA president John Doonan. “We sent out a request from automakers, and so far the results have been positive”.
Glickenhaus submitted modified version of their 007 LMH, saying on Twitter “it’s just like an lmp car, but less downforce and with 600hp”.
Famed Italian race car designers Wolf racing also submitted a proposal, but where rejected because the organizers could not understand Italian.
Ginetta also submitted a proposal, based off their next gen lmp3 platform, saying “EVERY FUCKING TIME WE FINISH A PROJECT, YOU MOTHERFUCKERS CHANGE THE REGULATIONS. STOP SCREWING US OVER, TAKE YOUR RACE CAR AND SHOVE IT”.
There was apparently a submission from an SCCA member, who offered to sell IMSA his Toyota powered 1998 world sports car, hoping to finally get the damn thing out of his house.

The most promising submission was from Radical, submitting their sr10, an open cockpit ecoboost powered prototype racer to the IMSA organizers. Having already proven themselves more than capable of producing fast and brilliant machines for the more affluent among us to go play racing driver on weekend, it seems almost like a natural progression when the one make series races and track bragging rights runs dry. “We have heard many of our customers complain that although their cars make them feel like pro racing drivers battling in the 2014 Rolex 24, they are not actually pro racing drivers”, says a Radical representative, “They want to one up their friends at CHIN track days who bought an old gt3 cup and are somehow faster. What better way than to bring home a class victory in IMSA”.
According to IMSA regulators, the LMP3 teams are welcoming of the idea, citing cost and am driver familiarity with running Radicals.
Picchio also submit a proposal. You go Picchio! (We remember you!)
