After recent events from the 6 hours of Watkins Gen, IMSA has decided on roll out a new set of regulations as a test before LMP3 is removed from the Weathertech championship:
“After noticing a lack of driver visibility from the LMP3 field, we’ve decided on a new course of action to try and fix this issue”, says IMSA head John Doonan.
He continues, “We first considered using high visibility paint as well as a HUD that points at the surround cars, however we’ve found a more cost-effective solution by partnering with Razor. By using the bright flags commonly fixed to Razor®️ Crazy Carts™️, our tests show a 10-fold improvement in driver awareness”.
The flags will undergo a trial race at Limerock this year, before being fully implemented for the rest of the season whenever LMP3 cars are on track.
Following the conclusion of the 2023 IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship, the flag rule will still apply, although thankfully the ungainly sight will no longer be sharing the track with the main championship going forwards, as LMP3 is dropped as a class.
We asked engineers within the sport about their thoughts on the performance hit these new flags will cause, however all we got was one guy from HPD telling us to fuck off with questions and someone from Europe who was unaware the race even happened.
