Tesla Replaces Steering Yoke with Touch Screen

Tesla is known for making rash and wild decisions regarding their technology, and this is another interesting evolution of the car as a while. Coming as a part of the new Model S “Houndstooth” version, this is a screen that replaces the unconventional yoke found in the Plaid.

“The waltz of progress knows no bounds”, said Elon Musk in his latest press release on twitter X, “therefore, I have decided to evolve Tesla to the next realm of automotive greatness.”

We reached out to our contact within Tesla’s vehicle dynamics team, but all we heard was whimpering followed by a lot of unintelligible screaming over the phone.

The idea was proposed after the success of SpaceX’s dragon capsule, who’s almost 100% touch screen based interior has proved successful for space flight.

The new screen that replaces the steering wheel holds several functions alongside just directional control. Currently there are two steering modes. The first mimics a steering wheel on screen, with the driver turning a customizable digital wheel. The second is called “Starship Mode”, and the car is able to be controlled by a series of fake buttons and switches.

We asked about their future plans to further evolve their steering systems. One possibly solution Tesla has been researching is motion tracking. Their r&d team has started development of a new system from a Facebook marketplace bulk listing for 150 used Xbox360 Kinects and a leapfrog game pad motherboard. This would allow the driver to simulate steering and using the pedals, while not actually having them present. While one would think the lack of any physical feedback would make this a nearly impossible task, a depressed Tesla engineer told us to just imagine a steering wheel in my hands, and that it had really direct feedback.

We will continue to keep track of new technology Tesla brings to the table.
