After a night of drunkenly watching iRacing’s “Week 13” shenanigans, directors at IMSA have decided to take inspiration for the 2024 season.
“We throughly enjoyed watching a figure 8 race comprised of Skip Barber Formula Dodges vs current F4 cars, and figured we could generate the same type of enthusiasm”, says IMSA head John Doonan.
IMSA wants to ensure that growth seen when introducing the new GTP class is continued once the manufacture entree list has stabilized. And what better way to do so than to give the audience a spectacle the likes of which have never been seen before. So the new one off races will act as tests to gauge viewer interest in making them standard events.
“We’re going to rent out Volusia County speedway, then make the LMP3 field and Mx5 Cup field have a multi-class, 200 lap race to accompany the build up to the Rolex 24”, Mr. Doonan said.
Other ideas has come up, such as releasing the GTP cars for qualifying in the middle of a gr86 cup race, figure 8 gt racing, and LMP3 vs Ox Carts. IMSA will also be taking suggestions from fans on the types of events held, as long as the Volusia race proves successful.
The 2024 season is looking to be the most wild and exiting yet! Be sure to send your suggestions in before the season begins!
