Robert Offner, M.D. is a man of many talents. He is a neurosurgeon, avid sailor, mountain biker, and a fan of Porsche cars.
He recently purchased a 992 generation 911 turbo, upgrading from his 991.2 Carrera S (PDK, heritage wheels, with the martini stripes) and after being teased by his other Porsche owing friends for years, has recently begun to track his car.
“I’m am so happy that I have chosen the ultimate driving machine, a Porsche 911
However, during the last event at Homestead International Speedway, the car suffered a catastrophic failure. Going out of turn 5, he hit a rumble strip, heard a small explosion, and felt then right rear of the car sag down.
“I immediately came into the pits, and was devastated”
The right rear strut on the car had completely burst, where a large hole in the side could be seen leaking hydraulic fluid.
After shipping the car back to the factory, the engineers were dumbfounded by the failure. Nothing like this had occurred. They flew Robbert out to the Leipzig test track, instructing him drive like he did in homestead.

After watching Robert set some very mediocre laps, they noticed over the mic that he was growing more over confident in his driving ability while not really improving much. However what interested them, was a seemingly steady rise in suspension loading that correlated with his increase in driving ego, until it reached a critical load.
“It seems the weight of Robert’s ego exceeded the factor of saftey designed into then 911’s suspension. We estimate that the driver’s side of the car was experiencing at least 12 times the car’s own weight”, a Porsche engineer told us, “our initial estimates only accounted for an ego inflation of half that amount.”
Porsche is taking the matter very seriously. While unable to conduct a full recall due to supply chain issues, the company is instead offering counseling and driver training to try and bring their clientele’s head back down to earth. They state that Ford’s own Performance Academy has been successful in reducing the amount of ego related incidents by 75%, and hope to do the same.
Robert, displeased with these conclusions, is in the process of filing a class action lawsuit against Porsche.
