2013 Nissan Versa – The Vile and the Hateful

From the hall of a local abandoned hydroelectric plant, The Skinwalker presents

This is without a doubt the worst vehicle I have driven with no redeeming part of the experience. These cars should not exist but here we are. Ahhhh Nissan, a company once loved and now loathed, I have a soft spot for Nissan solely because the questionable choice to have a Datsun 280zx as a first car. Once known for near Toyota and Honda quality cars that were cheap but full of charm, they are now known for rental fleets and failing CVTs. This vehicle perfectly echos the brand ethos of cheap cars that they shit out for those who didn’t have the credit to buy a corolla.

This car is not worthy of my asking my friend for an actual photo, this is the closest representative online stock image.

Pros: fuel economy, very cheap to buy
Cons: steering, comfort, power train, interior quality, the entire experience

The first problem with this thing is apparent as soon as you turn the steering wheel, it feels like a turned off sim wheel with a little more resistance. Its clear that not a single minute was spent tuning the electric power steering on this car, with no effort at all the wheels just spins, regardless of speed or how hard you corner nothing changes, its just there in your hands displaying the same identical light resistance across the full travel. The steering of this thing is genuinely an atrocity. Things do not improve when you press the gas, the powertrain feels like a rubber band, and doesn’t feel any different from half full throttle, the transmission chooses an rpm, rubber bands around it a little bit and the things moves forwards. No attention was paid at all to handling, despite being only 2600 pounds it’s totally hopeless in corners with zero body control and immediate understeer with zero feedback. I am truly impressed at how something so light can drive so bad, at highway speeds it feels like a moderate breeze would remove it from the road.

Onto the quality of life features, the good news is that it is very fuel efficient, and the back seats are very spacious for the class, not that you would want to spend any time in them. The interior is as cheap as it gets, cloth slapped onto vaguely human shaped slabs of hard foam, the seats are immediately uncomfortable, god forbid anyone do a road trip in this car. Everything reeks of cost cutting, nothing is good. As the fate of all Nissan products, my friend traded it in for a Mazda 2 when the transmission started slipping, a nice treat to add to every suspension bushing having failed. He was happy to be done with, as was I happy when I stepped out knowing I would never have to drive it again.
