2018 Porsche Cayman – Thrice as Nice

WE’RE DOING IT AGAIN ASSHOLES!

DO WE NEED TO WAX LYRCAL ONCE MORE ABOUR THE VIRTUES OF THE BASE PORSCHE CAYMAN? Probably not BUT WE WILL ANYWAYS!!!

We drive a base Porsche Cayman on track so YOU don’t have to. But you probably should anyways.

Do you wanna riiiiiiide in the back seat of a caddie?

Is there really anything new to report? No. And fuck you for asking. The car just as eager to get its ass spanked around a race track as ever. It’s light feeling, well balance, and a joy to drive on track even in PDK guise.

Are you tired of your Miata but don’t have 911 money to throw at a new track car? Well go make the correct decision and buy a Lotus Alpine Alfa Romeo USED BASE MODEL PORSCHE CAYMAN asshole! No, the fact that it’s powered by Porsche’s take on an EJ20 WILL NOT MATTER when you’re finally able to pass that jackass in his ex-SCCA 350z while you still have working air conditioner.

Does that engine bother you? Do YOU have 4.0L money? No? THEN FUCK OFF. You WILL take turbo lag till 3000 RPM and be pleased. The auditory experience of monotone, dry flatulence you say? I can’t hear your over BEAUTIFUL sound of UPSET TRACTION CONTROL CUTTING POWER!

THE GERMANS MIGHT’VE LOST BOTH WORLD WARS BUT BY GOD THEY’RE STILL FIGHTING ON THE GOOD FIGHT ON TRACK (Pay no mind to the fact that Porsche is no longer running in WEC).

Why spend $40-100,000 on some BRITISH JUNK when you could buy a Porsche Cayman? The irony of us at MSIMA making that statement is not lost on me but any chance of me owning a v6 Exige certainly is… So let’s focus back to that now abandoned child from Stuttgart.

Does it turn? Do you burn? This car whispers SWEET NOTHINGS AND MORE through its chassis— right ok I think he’s over stayed his welcome.

I’ll keep it shorter than even the last time we looked at this repeat car on MSIMA. The base model 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman is a good car with a great chassis and a kinda dull motor. After the third time having spanked one on track, I’m still just as in love with the drive as always. The car just loves to talk. You can feel the rear move around, the front end bite or slip, and just… you have a lovely sense of what the car is wanting to do on track. It can be a scalpel or it can be playful. I drove it like an actual ape and it didn’t seem to care. It’s super easy to learn and find its limits. And once your there the car is still approachable and controllable because it gives you all the feedback you need for the track.

Those engineers back in Stuttgart and Leipzig have made a car that you can genuinely thrash around controllably both at your and its limit for seemingly the rest of eternity. The track rental program we keep visiting at Rudskogen to play with these just keeps doing basic maintenance and not much else to their fleet of essentially stock but caged 718s. And if that ain’t a decent selling point I can’t help you.

The motor is still its weakest link. It doesn’t sound particularly inspiring inside or out. And it has those lovely turbo car features of having lag and an off boost throttle that I would describe as “eh”. I get moving some torque lower in your RPM range, but I’m starting to miss a flax six now. And it could use a bit more *oomph*. Does it matter that much if this is your track rat? Absolutely not, you won’t pay attention to the exhaust note when playing race car driver. And the way this thing handles and allows you to extract so much damn performance outweighs a bit of turbo lag and a flat exhaust note. Just keep the RPM above 3k.

Thems the facts and the opinions. I’m sure I’ll be back next year having driven the car again with less to share and more manic rambling to produce. Buy a used Cayman and drive the piss out of it, you’ll probably find happiness.
